Video class preview here https://youtu.be/skFNNWI-0B8 We will make beautiful Gold rings! Gold is so much easier to work with than any other metal and not difficult at all. In this class you will be learning simple, primitive methods for melting and alloying (changing the karat) of 24k gold down to usable beautiful material, which will give you the keys to success when working with high karat gold! You will learn to melt 24k with silver and copper to make beautiful 22k gold that is extremely rich in color and will fuse successfully! We will turn that 22k alloy into 21k-20k for harder materials suitable for ring shanks. You’ll also learn to solder and fuse 22k gold. We’ll turn the metal into sheet for bezels and backplates, roll it into square ingots using the grooves in a combo rolling mill, and then draw it down into wire and half round ring shanks using a home made inexpensive draw bench. I’ll teach you how to easily re-melt and use your scraps from your studio so there is no waste
You can use 24k gold (casting grain or 24k gold coin) for this project. I recommend you get 1 troy oz of 24k gold casting grain. This is more than enough gold for two size 7 ring shanks with 2 settings: a square cushion cut, and pear with a little granulation for decoration and still have a good amount gold left over!
If you can only afford a 1/2 oz of gold you can make bezels and earring or solder the gold bezels to silver shanks You can use silver and draw 1/2 round for ring shanks if you prefer to do that part in silver.
Tools required are pretty standard tools that all serious jewelers should own: a combination rolling mill (with grooves and flat space on rollers), a $40 boat/trailer winch to make a home made draw-bench, 2 draw plates (half round and round with 6 to 3 mm’s holes). Basic planishing hammers, pliers, files, etc. We will make step bezels and will NOT use burs for stone settings. You will need a proper torch (no mapp no butane) A smith-silversmith acetylene with #1 and #2 tips , or My favorite is the smith little ( oxy propane with a multi port tips ). This class has about 10 hrs of video and is quite extensive, and have 4 months to complete the class. Why learn to roll out gold from scrap ?Unlike silver, high karat gold components do not come in that many options. Look and see if you can find 20 or 21k gold sheet or wire. If you try to make a special order for it there will be a up charge. It’s EASY if you have the skills to make it just the way you want it, right from the comfort of your own studio!
Gold is wearable wealth! With 1 troy oz of gold I made 2 rings. If you sold only one ring, you would cover the cost of the gold and the class, and still have a beautiful gold ring to keep for yourself. These are heirloom rings in high karat gold and will most likely be handed down when you’re done enjoying them. They will last forever. You have FOUR MONTHS to view the class (possibly more if you sign up early!) Class price is $399. Its over 10 hours of video that will help you learn invaluable skills. This will be a one of a kind most extensive online training for those learning to work in high karat gold!Every jewelry should have the skills taught in this class! Hope you can join me!
